Some tips on how to get the best shot

Last updated:

In photography, a lot of elements are involved in framing the right picture. Here are some important tips:

General

• Always decide what kind of light you need for your shot and at what angle it should enter the frame.

• Use a tripod if possible, to steady a shot.

• Do not shoot against the light, unless you want a silhouette.

• Photography is all about trial and error — take as many photographs as possible. Then assess each one and learn from your errors.

In daylight

• Scenic, outdoor shots are best when taken with a wide-angle lens.

• Use a macro lens or macro setting in your camera for close-up shots of subjects such as butterflies, flowers.

• When shooting a series of actions, shoot in continuous mode.

• Fill-in-flash helps light the subject if you have a really bright background.

• But it is preferable not to use flash in the daytime, to avoid shadows.

At night

• Get as close as possible to the subject if using flash.

• If there is enough light, you can experiment with silhouettes.

• Long exposure is the key to great night-time photographs.
