Hamdan reiterates UAE stand on helping refugees
'We look forward to the day when the phenomenon disappears'.
Abu Dhabi: The UAE will always remain committed to the issues of refugees worldwide, said Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region.
In a statement marking World Refugee Day yesterday, Shaikh Hamdan, who is also Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), reiterated the UAE's supportive stand towards refugees and their issues.
"The UAE will always extend its hand to assist the refugees and help ease their suffering," he said, adding that the UAE would play a pivotal role in sponsoring refugees in line with the instructions of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan; His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Shaikh Hamdan noted that the initiatives of Shaikh Khalifa back the voluntary return of refugees home and the provision of what it takes to stabilise them in their original homes.
He reiterated that the UAE leadership was concerned about the refugees' suffering, adding that such dire conditions require orchestrated international efforts and boosting of partnerships among humanitarian organisations to improve the refugees' conditions. He cited the role of the RCA in sponsorship and protection of the refugees to ease their burden.
Shaikh Hamdan highlighted the role of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in assisting over 23 million refugees worldwide, appreciating the existing partnership between the RCA and UNHCR to ease the suffering of refugees in a number of regions across the globe.
"We are looking forward to the day when the refugee phenomenon disappears forever as people enjoy good living conditions," he said.
