How widespread is the online purchase of beauty products in the UAE?

It is a common practice, especially among women. Attractive advertisements with images to support the ‘before and after look’ easily lure people into trying out new products. They can be cheap as well.

Which products commonly bought online are dangerous?

There are many such products, but the most common ones are bleaching creams and hair products like sprays, gels, shampoos etc, besides vitamins and supplements.

How are they dangerous?

Let’s begin with bleaching creams. Using them without consulting a doctor can result in hyperpigmentation or ochronosis, a bluish black discolouration of the skin. These creams contain a high percentage of the bleaching agent hydroquinone which can be harmful if you are allergic to certain medicines, foods and certain other substances or if you are planning to get pregnant.

Many products contain lead and mercury and are not properly packed as well. They are toxic and can damage the brain.

What about creams with anti-oxidants like glutathione?

Glutathione is a good anti-oxidant and is used to whiten the skin or in other words makes you look fairer. But when it is indiscriminately used, in high concentrations, it can cause damage to vital organs like the kidneys. So one has to be very careful.

What are the adverse effects of trying out different vitamins and supplements?

Vitamins are organic compounds which we need in small quantities for good health. A good diet is usually enough to meet this requirement. But when there is deficiency, it may be necessary to take supplements. Overuse can be detrimental and cause risks. If vitamin A is overused for instance, it can lead to skin and eye problems. Similarly, an overdose of vitamin C is linked with renal stones. The problem is that these products are marketed very aggressively and are easily available. But their efficacy may not always be a given.

Which are the dangerous hair products and why?

There are a lot of misconceptions about hair loss. People believe that the quality of water in the UAE leads to severe hair loss. No doubt, water quality affects hair texture, but it is important to remember that hair loss could be associated with an underlying medical condition like thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, polycystic syndrome, anaemia etc. A simple fever may shift the hair’s growing phase to the resting phase. So one must determine the physiological problem and treat the root cause. One must guard against indiscriminate use of hair sprays, gels and shampoos as they contain harmful chemicals.
