No casualties reported as authorities work to repair damage
Ras Al Khaimah: Several areas in the northern parts of Ras Al Khaimah suffered frequent power cuts, each of which lasted for few hours after a blaze gutted the main power generator which feeds these areas.
Police, civil defence and Federal Electricity and Water Emergency (Fewa) moved to the scene to handle the situation and work is still under way to rectify the damage which affected mainly Sha'am, Wadi Sha'am and other public villages near these areas.
Once the fire in the power generator was reported, several civil defence vehicles from the Halilah Civil Defence Station moved to the scene and started fighting the fire.
Sources at the Civil Defence Department said that the power generator and the post lamp next to it was totally burned, but no casualties were reported in the fire.
The sources stressed that initially the reason for the blaze was a power overload and the firefighters used mainly powder to put the fire out.
Investigation
Once the work of the civil defence and firefighters was over, the police launched an investigation in the case and the emergency personnel of Fewa started their work to restore power to the affected areas, which urgently called on the Fewa to fix the damage and restore power.
Sources in Ras Al Khaimah said that the fire was caused by rainwater leaking into the power generator and causing a serious short circuit that ended up in a fire that gutted the generator and the nearby lamp post.
Mohammad Khalil Al Shamsi, a spokesperson for Fewa said that the power cut on Wadi Sha'am and Al Dhoriyeen areas was caused by the burning of the end of the last electric unit which feeds these areas in northern Ras Al Khaimah.
He said that this unit connects two electric cables which feed the areas and that once the case was reported to Fewa, the emergency units of the authority moved instantly to the scene to handle the situation and restore power to the affected areas.
