London's most solemn funeral
Britain said farewell to Lord Mountbatten, first member of the Royal Family to be assassinated by Irish guerrillas, with the most solemn funeral seen in London since Churchill's in 1965.

PLO leader calls for Egypt's suspension
Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) leader Yasser Arafat implicitly called for the suspension or expulsion of Egypt from the Non-Aligned Movement, which is holding its sixth summit in Havana.

Lebanese in hijack bid to reach Cuba
Four hijackers with pistols hidden in chocolate boxes seized an Italian airliner in the Middle East and were holding 42 hostages at Rome airport. The hijackers freed 141 of their 183 hostages in exchange for fuel.

Japanese Parliament dissolved: Polls in October
Japanese Premier Masayoshi Ohira dissolved parliament and was expecting to make substantial gains for his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in general elections on October 7.

Actress found dead in car
Jean Seberg, American actress who disappeared from her Paris apartment nine days ago, was found dead in her car in Paris' 16th district, police reported.

US accepts new reality in Iran
US President Jimmy Carter is expected to name a new Ambassador to Tehran following Iran's rejection earlier this year of his first nominee. The head of the US mission, Bruce Laingen, has been in Iran for two and a half months, but has not been received by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Non-aligned put Egypt on probation
The Non-Aligned Summit conference ended with a reaffirmation of the movement's independence from either power bloc, but only after a bitter battle over a proposal to suspend Egypt because of its peace treaty with Israel. The summit left Egypt's status unchanged, but called into question its future membership of the movement. In effect Egypt was put on probation.

Whitecaps win 'Bowl'
Former England international Alan Ball added another medal to his impressive collection as he led the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies in "Soccer Bowl '79".

September 11

Iran's Revolutionary Council chief dead
Ayatollah Mahmoud Taleghani, the spiritual chief of Tehran and one of the three most popular members of the ruling clergy, died at the age of 68. There were scenes of hysteria in Tehran as huge crowds gathered for his burial.

September 12

Angola's President dies in Moscow
Angolan President Agostinho Neto, one of the Kremlin's closest friends in Africa and a champion of the Cuban presence there, died in Moscow after an operation.
