Khomeini aide assassinated
IRAN'S provisional government has declared a national day of mourning over the death of Ayatollah Moretza Motahari, who was fatally shot in Tehran. Motahari was wounded by a single bullet in the back of his head. He was immediately taken to Torfeh hospital, but died before surgeons could operate.

Margaret Thatcher wins general election
CONSERVATIVE Party leader Margaret Thatcher was summoned by Queen Elizabeth and took office as the first woman prime minister in the history of Britain and the western industrialised world. The call to Buckingham Palace followed the decisive defeat of Prime Minister James Callaghan's Labour Party in general election.
White dominance ends in Rhodesia
RHODESIA's acting president proclaimed the white-dominated parliament dissolved, making way for an enlarged assembly with a majority of blacks. The proclamation in the government gazette, signed by acting President Lieutenant General Henry Everard, ends 56 years of white supremacist rule in the country.

Trade licences only for UAE nationals
GENERAL trade licences and company agency licences in Abu Dhabi will henceforth be issued to those who are UAE nationals and to national-owned companies with a minimum of four years commercial practice. This is the gist of a resolution that was passed and promulgated by the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Dazzling military display
A DAZZLING military display marked the ceremonial passing out parade of twelve squads of security forces at the Dubai Police Training School. As the graduating policemen marched past to the beat of a bagpipe band, His Highness Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took the salute (top picture).

Egypt suspended from APU
THE membership of Egypt was suspended by the Arab Postal Union. The head office would also be shifted from Cairo, according to a decision taken by the Executive Council of the Union meeting in Doha.
May 9
Egypt stays away from Fez talks
EGYPT will be excluded from the Islamic Foreign Ministers' Conference in Fez, Morocco. A preparatory committee earlier had approved a move by some Arab states to "suspend" Egyptian membership in the 42-nation Islamic movement in retaliation for Egypt's signing of a separate peace treaty with Israel.
