Arab walkout as Sadat speaks at OAU
Leaders of all African Arab nations and several Soviet- influenced countries in black Africa walked out of the summit meeting as Egyptian President Anwar Sadat delivered a spirited defence of his peace treaty with Israel. Some Arab delegations, including Libya and Algeria, withdrew from the crowded conference hall with all their officials.

Stage collapses as world beauty is picked
The 1979 Miss Universe contest ended in chaos when the stage collapsed moments after Miss Venezuela, 18-year-old Maritza Sayalero, was declared winner. The 78 contestants in evening dress were filing onto the raised dais at Perth's entertainment centre when part of the stage work fell in amid a loud rumbling noise and screams from the girls.

Giant tanker sinks
The 293,000-ton Atlantic Empress, ablaze since a collision with another supertanker, blew up and sank in the Caribbean. The huge vessel, which broke in two before going down, left a vast oil spill about 18 miles north of tourist beaches of Tobago. The Atlantic Empress and the Aegean Captain collided and burst into flames in fog and rain.

Dubai's first macaroni factory begins work
The first macaroni factory in the United Arab Emirates built at a cost of Dh9.6 million was inaugurated in Dubai by His Highness Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The Production Manager Adnan Awad said the management was confident of increasing the current daily production of 10 tonnes to 20 tonnes by early next year.
Ballesteros-triumph of brute force
Severiano Ballesteros of Spain finally broke into golf's big time when he won the British Open, in spectacular and flamboyant style by three strokes at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Israel carries on regardless
Israeli troops and Lebanese right-wing militiamen raided this south Lebanese village and blew up a house before withdrawing. The raid took place as other militiamen and United Nations troops confronted each other at the nearby village of Beit Yahoun.
US will use force in Gulf, says Brown
Defence Secretary Harold Brown said in an interview that the United States is prepared to use military power to defend its vital interests in such areas as the Gulf. "I think the United States is prepared to use military power when in defence of its vital interests," he said.
