February 23

Martial law clamped on Kabul
Gunfire and mass demonstrations erupted in Kabul during a dramatic nationwide general strike and martial law was declared as Soviet forces struggled to prop up the weakening authority of the regime in Afghanistan. Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev said "Let the United States together with the neighbours of Afghanistan guarantee this, and then the need for Soviet military assistance will cease to exist."

Bomb kills daughter of Bashir Gemayel
The baby daughter of Lebanese Right-wing leader Bashir Gemayel was killed in an attempt to assassinate her father. A remote-controlled bomb went off as Bashir Gemayel's car passed on a busy road in the Christian eastern sector of Beirut.

February 25

Zayed orders reduced oil prices for all
His Highness Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAE President, issued instructions extending the recent decisions on subsidised petrol prices to all, including foreigners resident in the UAE.

February 26

Consultative Council approves visa bill
The National Consultative Council has approved the bill on the cancellation of self sponsorships and will present its recommendations to the Executive Council. The Council has recommended that UAE youths be forbidden to marry foreigners and those who fail to comply with this decision should not be allowed to serve in government offices.

Rangers contained by a spirited Al Nasr team
The Glasgow Rangers performance was hardly anything to write home about. A spirited Al Nasr team came up with a fighting display which helped them contain the visiting team to a victory margin of one goal. The Rangers, whose visit to Dubai forms part of the Three Fives Gulf football tour, lacked fluency, particularly in front, and they missed a number of opportunities of scoring due to poor finishing.

Dubai to contribute half of federal budget allocation
Dubai will contribute 50 per cent of the federal budget allocation with the establishment of the UAE Central Bank. Shaikh Surour Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Chamberlain of the Presidential Court, will be the first Governor of the Central Bank.

PLO founder leader dead
Ahmad Shukeiri, first president of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, died in Amman, aged 72. Shukeiri was elected president of the PLO shortly after it was formed in 1964 and continued in the post until after the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Surinam's new regime orders Arron's arrest
The three sergeants who toppled Surinam's elected government in a labour dispute imposed a curfew, cut most lines of communication with the outside world and ordered the arrest of Prime Minister Henek Arron. Arron fled the capital during coup in the former Dutch colony.

Shaikh Mohammad inaugurates Masafi car rally
Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Defence Minister, inaugurated the Masafi 4-wheel drive rally that started off from the Dubai Hilton. Thirty four cars started on the 450 kilometre drive which will end this afternoon.

Ten Bogota hostages freed
Left-wing Colombian guerrillas occupying the Dominican Republic Embassy in Bogota have released 10 of their hostages, including two wounded people. The freed hostages were among an estimated 60 people, including 15 ambassadors, who were captured when more than 20 guerrillas stormed the embassy building during a reception marking the Dominican Republic national day.
