Abu Dhabi: Nearly 4,000 enthusiasts from over 50 countries participated in the recent photography contest organised by the Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, a statement from the centre said on Sunday.

The statement added that the centre's judging panel recently picked three winners for the contest, entitled ‘Spaces of Light', which started last October.

A reception will soon be held to announce the winners and present them with monetary prizes of Dh300,000 in total. The Grand Mosque Centre will also set up a gallery of the winning photos and publish an album of the best photos that were submitted for the contest.

Dr Jasem Al Awadi, head of the judging panel for the competition, said the contest had been a means for facilitating meaningful cultural exchange.

"The competition [enhanced] the role of the mosque as a place of interaction, while the interest shown… from [participants in] various countries will foster dialogue and move the contest forward in the coming years," he said.

Dr Al Awadi also added that participants had included both amateur and professional photographers, and that most participants had focused on showing the aesthetics of the mosque and the symmetry in its structure.
