Geneva: Dr Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, first deputy speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), yesterday chaired the 131st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.

She chaired the session upon a request by Abdul Wahid Al Radhi, Speaker of IPU, a move that reflects the trust placed in the hard work and efforts made by the UAE Parliamentary Division in all IPU meetings and activities.

It also demonstrates the active participation of the UAE Parliamentary Division in all its committees and its contribution to providing the necessary technical support for IPU to further serve the key strategic goals of the international parliament.

In a speech before the assembly, Dr Amal highlighted the UAE’s experience in developing women’s role in harmony with Arab and Islamic cultural values.

“The UAE has adopted, since its establishment, economic and social policies focused on developing individuals and community and providing all means for a dignified and stable life. It also adopted policies that aim to achieve quality and bridge the gender gap,” Dr Amal said.

The event brings together 650 MPs, who will represent the 120 Parliaments of the IPU member states.

The participants are also expected to elect the new leader of the IPU.

The meeting will address such topics as Establishing equality between men and women and put an end to violence against women, National sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs of States and human rights in international law.

The agenda also includes the report of the Standing Committees of International Peace and Security, Sustainable Development, Finance and Trade, and UN Affairs.
