Five workers hurt as scaffolding collapses
Five construction workers were seriously injured in two separate incidents of scaffolding collapse here yesterday.
Ras Al Khaimah: Five construction workers were seriously injured in two separate incidents of scaffolding collapse here yesterday.
In yet another incident, two construction workers were injured after they mishandled a machine.
Police sources said in the first incident three labourers a Sri Lankan, a Bangladeshi and a Filipino fell down from the platform they were working on.
Police said the scaffolding was not properly fixed. Other workers and witnesses said the scaffolding quickly gave way bringing down the platform with it.
Hospital sources said the victims suffered extensive fractures in the fall and are in the intensive care unit.
Authorities began an investigation into the collapse and summoned officials from the construction company.
Even as the authorities initiated an inquiry another similar accident was reported in which two Egyptian construction workers fell to the ground when the scaffolding they were standing on collapsed.
Sources said the two Egyptian labourers were taken to Saqr Hospital and medical sources said they suffered multiple fractures.
Police sources said the accidents clearly indicated the need for stricter safety measures at construction sites.
They said authorities should force construction companies to implement better safety measures to protect the labourers.
The sources added that the authorities are currently in the process of finalising a new safety law which will be imposed on all construction companies to provide their labourers with better safety equipment.
In the third incident, two Indian workers were injured after the machine they were using injured them. Sources said the two labourers were at the construction site of a shopping mall and were asked to assess the performance of a machine. The workers did not know how to operate it and that caused the injuries, sources said.
The two were taken to Saqr Hospital and they underwent critical surgeries. Authorities have initiated an investigation.
