Ras Al Khaimah: A father drowned off Al Rams in Ras Al Khaimah while trying to save his two young sons.
The tragedy struck Major Nasser Ahamd Al Tunaiji, a 34-year-old UAE national working for UAE Armed Forces, while he was picnicking with his children on a beach in Al Rams on a clear day.
As the day progressed, Al Tunaiji started to read and his sons went for a swim and before he could realise the boys were caught by the waves and pushed into the deep sea.
The father, who was on the shore with his five-year-old daughter Aisha, was shocked to find his sons fighting the high waves and rushed to save their lives, said Lieutenant Colonel Solaiman Al Kizi, head of Al Rams Police Station.
The young girl followed her father till water level permitted her to. The father went into the deep and fought the waves to save his sons. He managed to get the boys near the shore, but fatigue started to take its toll on him.
The chaos and desperation on a desolate beach caught the attention of two passing Emiratis, who rushed to Al Tunaiji's rescue.
But the proud father told the men to take his sons to safety. The rescuers took the children to safety and as they turned back to help the tired father, they were shocked to find him missing.
The body of Al Tunaiji was later recovered.
