Abu Dhabi: You do not have to be a professional architect to appreciate a well-designed building.

And now 50 carefully chosen designs — highlighting the great partnership between form and functionality — are sure to elicit a sense of awe in all those who visit the Contemporary Norwegian Architecture Exhibition 2000-2005.

Inaugurated on Sunday by Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; and Chancellor, Higher Colleges of Technology, and Ase Elin Bjerke, the Ambassador of Norway, the exhibition presents a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about Norway through these structures, in addition to providing inspiration for buildings in the UAE.

"The materials used by architects in Norway are both economical and versatile, which are sure to make them useful to the construction industry in the UAE," Bjerke said.

"A common challenge for all architects in the years to come is to build environmentally sustainable [buildings] for the future."
