Dubai: The world’s first tram with synchronised automatic platform doors and a fully automatic operation system to assist drivers will begin testing in Dubai shortly.

The 14.6 km Dubai Tram project (earlier called Al Sufouh tramway) from Dubai Marina to Al Sufouh is expected to become operational by November.

Eleven trams will operate in the first phase. There will be 11 tram stations including two connected to Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Tower (JLT) Metro stations and one to the Palm monorail.

A footbridge will link the tram stations to the Metro stations.

The trams will run at a maximum speed of 50km/h. CCTV, passenger information and a video broadcasting system will be aboard every tram. A trip from Dubai Marina to Al Sufouh will take 42 minutes.

The stations include: Jumeirah Beach Residence 1, Jumeirah Beach Residence 2, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Marina Mall, Dubai Marina, Marina Towers, Mina Seyahi, Media City, Palm Jumeirah, Knowledge Village and Al Sufouh.

NOL cards can be used to pay fares. Each tram will have gold, silver and women’s classes and operate at six-minute intervals.
