Dubai: Dubai Police have developed a computer programme that monitors crime rates using maps to determine areas with high crime rates.

Lieutenant Colonel Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, Deputy Director General of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for Management Affairs at Dubai Police, said the program is completely a Dubai Police effort and was the idea of Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police.

Al Jallaf said that the programme helps identify the areas with high crime rates by using electronic maps and identifying the number of crimes committed in each area, the type of crime and its seriousness. The information is then used to intensify patrols or security measures in those areas.

The system can be accessed by police on patrol, so they know what areas they should focus on.

“The Security Index” programme, Al Jallaf said, is now in demand internationally. He said that the US Police used it for training purposes.

The programme also compares crime rates from the past years and is connected to the existing system used by Dubai Police.

The programme showed that in the first half of 2012, crime rates have been lower than the past year.

Theft crimes have gone down by 4.5 per cent, crimes against people went down by 37.5 per cent, serious assault went down by 13.9 per cent and economical crimes went down by 44 per cent.
