Dubai: Police denied reports about a fire breaking out at the Burj Khalifa on Saturday night. Police termed it a rumour, a "Blackberry story".

The rumour spread like wild fire on social-networking websites with many users posting pictures of what appears like bright light on one side of Burj Khalifa.

In fact, thick fog descending on Burj Khalifa at midnight was translated on social-networking websites as fire at the tallest tower in the world.

Some other social-network users said they either called friends who lived near the Burj or went there to check it out, but none claimed to have seen the fire.

Dubai Civil Defence was not immediately available for comment.

Why are such people so much interested in spreading wrong news than important news!!! Everyone should consider reporting something that will be very much beneficial to the world.

How Can one know if this is a rumour or not if one cannot see the Burj Khalifa Lights even from a small distance.. Its good that Gulf News highlighted this note at 12:30am which caused the rumours to die down quickly.

This shows the maturity of the people who are involved in such silly jokes. This kind of pranks can have some serious repercussions. Authorities should consider this seriously and should not entertain anybody who is spreading false information. Recently we had some unfortunate incidents of buildings destroyed by fire, so people will tend to believe such rumours and will get panicked. This childish act is not something expected from a good citizen.

Spammers utilized the fog to spread wrong news. Because of the Fog people from high rise building cannot see the flashing lights of Burj Khalifa and which indirectly made them more curious.
