Dubai: The sixth season of the Western Union Camp Ka Champ, the singing contest popularly known as “Dubai Idol” within the South Asian expatriate community, has begun.
The preliminary round of auditions was carried out between June 14 and the end of July and saw over 1,300 hopefuls from over 60 labour facilities across the UAE take part.
The three-month contest, free for all workers, will culminate in a two-member team being crowned “Champ of the Camps” for 2012.
ETA Group has won the contest for the last three consecutive years, and is in the running for a record 4th consecutive win.
The contest now progresses into the quarter-finals, between August 23 and September 8. The semi-finals and final will be on October 5.
Western Union Camp Ka Champ has grown steadily since its first season in 2007, which had three companies and four facilities participating.
Rupa Vinod, Managing Director of contest organisers Right Track Advertising, said, “Western Union Camp Ka Champ is now well entrenched in the UAE labour community’s calendar.
“It is not only an event, it is also a wonderful journey of discovery of the singing skills of our worker communities.
“This CSR initiative has empowered hundreds of workers from the Indian sub-continent and has given them an opportunity to showcase the power of their voices and a halo of recognition by their peers and friends.”
Western Union sponsors Camp Ka Champ along with etisalat, Navratna Cooling Oil and Fair and Handsome Advanced Whitening Cream for Men. Zee Cinema, Zee TV and Radio 4 FM are the media partners of the contest this year
