Drive benefits scores of workers

Abu Dhabi: Around 240 labourers were given first aid kits from the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) on Wednesday following afternoon prayers.
Over 60 labourer supervisors gathered in front of the RCA building to collect nutritious meals, RCA T-shirts and first aid kits.
The second RCA gathering is an annual cause meant to educate labourers about healthy measures to take during the hot weather to avoid heat stroke, exhaustion and dehydration.
Humanitarian
Protecting labourers from the heat is an initiative and decision taken previously by the Ministry of Labour which demanded that labourers do not work during the heat, specifically from July 1 to August 31 between 12.30pm and 3pm.
According to Dr Saleh Mousa Al Ta'ei, secretary-general at the RCA, the initiative is a humanitarian cause that gives labourers their rights and reduces the health risks involved in working outdoors during hot weather conditions.
"This initiative is a partnership between the Ministry of Labour and the Red Crescent, and one of our biggest projects is to create mobile emergency clinics on construction sites that carry fully equipped medical material in case of on-site injuries, equipment for diabetics and an advanced first aid kit," said the secretary-general.
Gulf News also learnt that next week more than 300 labourers and supervisors from 60 different districts across the UAE will gather in front of the Ministry of Labour in Dubai to attend a campaign regarding heat stroke and precautions to take while working in the heat.
"This is the first time we have done this campaign and it's a great initiative that will increase awareness among labourers across the UAE," said Dr Mohammad Shemias, from the First Aid and Community Safety Department at the RCA.
