Abu Dhabi: More than Dh6 million was distributed to 268 divorced women across the UAE in the first seven months of the year through the Zakat Fund.

The Talahum (solidarity) project provides help for divorced women who have children, who can’t afford daily requirements and have no breadwinner.

“The Talahum programme aims to raise the living standards of divorced women and their children and help them to lead a decent life and become productive members of society,” Mohammad Al Beloushi, head of Zakat Fund recipients’ affairs, said.

The Zakat Fund has started to accept applications through its website since the beginning of this year.

The applicant should provide the Fund with a certificate from the court stating that the divorced woman is not married and doesn’t work, a salary certificate in case she works, the employment contract, authenticated lease contract and water and electricity bills.

The Fund spent over Dh2 million on divorcees in 2013 and around Dh1 million on widows.

The Zakat Fund has also distributed money to special needs people, low-income people, the distressed, students, patients, orphans and new Muslims.

“The Fund has started the Read Project to help students pay their tuition fees and complete their education. The Read project urges students to seek knowledge for academic excellence and reduce the financial burden on low-income parents,” Al Beloushi said.

“Students are not the only beneficiaries of Zakat Fund, but also many prisoners have been released after the Fund cleared their debts and offered care to their families,” he added.
