Dubai: "She's given me life, what could I do to match up to that?"

For 22-year-old Indian expatriate, Janoo Chugani, she could never thank enough the woman who is her mother, sister and best friend.

She said: "She is God's greatest gift to me. The little things she does are the most important and I want to thank her for all that she has done for me, including picking up and dropping me to school every day till I was in grade 10."

Gulf News readers talk about thanking their mum on Mother's Day, celebrated today in the UAE.

Eight-year-old Shayan Raza, decided to express his gratitude to his mother once by making a card on Mother's Day. He still remembers the two words he heard when he presented the card to her: "Good job."

While he loves his mother for taking him out for movie trips over the weekend, 10-year-old Sri Lankan expatriate, Drushenka Peiris, loves her mother for the bed-time stories.

"We pray together at night and then my mother reads me bed-time stories," Peiris said. Fond childhood memories also linger on with Hind Saeed Mubarak, a 48-year-old Emirati.

She remembers how her parents fought for their children's attention.

"They fought over whom we loved more, which makes me feel so special. As a child, I saw my mother as the wisest person in the world - I could ask her anything and she had the answer," Hind said.

The relationship has not changed over the decades, with her mother still a part of her every day life.

Vanessa Arnold, a 37-year-old Jamaican, agrees that the relationship between a mother and child only grows stronger over the years.

"I could definitely thank her more for all that she's done for me. I love the honest relationship we have with each other," Arnold said.

Recalling a recent incident when her 74-year-old mum played with her in a park playground, Arnold says she is always amazed at how open her mother is to new experiences in life.

Portugese expatriate, Joao Neves, 36, also finds it amusing how her mother can handle the tantrums of her 15-month-old son better than her.

She said: "He cries more loudly when I handle him, but his grandmother can distract him and make him laugh in a moment!"

Her mother played a critical role for Joao, as she became a working mother.

"It is a fantastic feeling to see my son and mother have a such a wonderful relationship. I hope she knows how much I appreciate her presence in my life," she said.
