Dubai: A fortnight-long awareness campaign has been launched to educate those concerned on the proper use of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders.

The Public Health and Safety Department of Dubai Municipality has launched the campaign, which will include all gas distribution agencies, restaurants and cafeterias in the Emirate of Dubai.

Eisa Al Suwaidi, Head of the Public Safety section said the Municipality spoke to all gas distribution companies, restaurants and cafeterias in the emirate of Dubai asking them to comply with safety requirements in dealing with gas cylinders.

"It was emphasised to all not to supply and fix gas cylinders at establishments that did not meet the requirements of public safety. Gas supply network must be designed to ensure easy and effective maintenance of different parts and complete safety upon any leakage," he said.

"Special well-ventilated cabinets, made of un-inflammable substances, must be provided for gas cylinders.

"They should be away from direct sunlight and sources of ignition. Gas cylinders must be stored in specific cabinets in a vertical position all the time. No other items or substances may be stored in gas cylinder cabinets," said Al Suwaidi.

"It is also necessary that a valid extinguisher be mounted at gas storage locations in an easily accessible place.

"Periodic maintenance programme of all parts and connections of gas lines must be developed and documented in special records," he said.
