Abu Dhabi: Rejoice, cycle enthusiasts. Abu Dhabi will be transformed into a cycling- and walking-friendly emirate by 2020, according to a master plan revealed by the Department of Transport (DoT).
The plan aims to double the number of walking and cycling tracks by 2020, and develop secure infrastructure to integrate cycling and walking with other means of public transport. “The idea is to make cycling an alternative form of transport and not just a sport,” said Abdullah Al Mehairbi, Acting Section Head of Public Transport Planning, DoT.
Al Mehairbi said the Walking and Cycling Master Plan (WCMP) includes developing walking and cycling routes and facilities, especially in the commercial and central areas of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and western region, and will assist in reducing the use of private vehicles. Neighbourhoods will be provided with a network of walking and cycling links including crossings between neighbourhoods.
According to the official, the project is ongoing in certain areas like Baynoona Street and Corniche. “The commercial areas of the northern part of the city will be transformed first but we are also looking at places away from the main island like Khalifa City and Shahama.”
Part of the plan is to develop end-of-ride facilities like designated parking spots for bicycles, and integrating cycling and walking tracks with other forms of public transport. While the first phase of the project will see the development of infrastructure, Saeed Al Hameli, Adviser – Surface Transport Executive Director, said the second phase will encourage the public to give up private vehicles and embrace the culture of walking and cycling.
