Abu Dhabi: A meeting of donor countries and international relief and humanitarian organisations will begin in Abu Dhabi today to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
The meeting is in line with the call of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nah-yan, Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) and Chairman of the Foreign Aid Coordination Committee.
Dr Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, will chair the meeting, which will determine the needs and priorities to help out Palestinians in Gaza who are suffering due to the ongoing Israeli aggression as well as to clear the barriers to deliver relief dispatches to Gaza.
"The UAE spared no effort in supporting the Palestine cause and its people at the political, fin-ancial, humanitarian and moral levels, and has always been the first to help them," Gargash said in a statement ahead of the meeting. He said the UAE is mobilising international efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza who have been exposed to difficult living conditions as a result of the ongoing Israeli aggression.
"The Israeli attacks on Palestinians, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent children and women, distance us from the peace process and further complicate the crisis," Gargash said. The meeting aims to coordinate international relief and humanitarian efforts under the umbrella of the United Nations.
Legitimate rights
"The key goal of this meeting is to provide protection to humanitarian bodies and international organisations and ensure the delivery of emergency assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza," he said.
He noted that the Foreign Ministry's support for this meeting is in line with the UAE government's endeavour to back the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights.
Abdul Haq Amiri, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), said by hosting this meeting, the UAE is offering a chance to donor bodies to get a clearer picture of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, so as to find the fastest way to dispatch relief assistance.
