Dubai: A mother is aiming to help raise money for children's charities by taking part in a gruelling 422-km trek from Muscat to Dubai in the baking heat on March 26.
Schoolteacher Jane Beere, 48, hopes to raise cash for the Jess Vietnam Project, which renovates community centres and helps special needs children, and Nyumbani Orphanage in Kenya with her epic 10-day hike. The British expat is aiming to run 42km a day.
Helping children
"I've chosen these charities as they care for children. I visited Nyumbani in 1992 and was moved by their work. The JESS Vietnam Project is ongoing and students at JESS are involved in helping the children there," she said.
Beere will be accompanied by her husband in a support car making sure she has plenty of water and carbohydrates. She is trying to get donations for the charities and is also appealing for sponsorship to help cover the cost of staying in hotels or in a camper van. "I am also hoping to run in a competition to raise money for which I am asking companies for prizes. People can "buy" a kilometre and guess how long it may take for me to run it. There will be prizes for winners," said Jane, who lives in Dubai Internet City.
She has been a runner for 20 years and has completed eight Dubai Marathons. She is running twice a day to build up her endurance and plans to run 150km the week before her trek. To donate to Jane or sponsor her, e-mail maljanreb@hotmail.com
