Workers receive pay hike after downing tools
Nearly 2000 workers of a Dubai-based contracting company on Saturday resumed work after their demand for a wage hike was considered by their management.
Dubai: Nearly 2000 workers of a Dubai-based contracting company resumed work on Saturday after their demand for a wage hike was considered by their management.
After arriving at their work sites at 8am in Jebel Ali and on Al Ain Road, the workers refused to pick up tools unless their demands were heard by their company's management.
An agreement was reached between the workers and the company officials, in the presence of labour officials and Dubai police, that an increment of Dh200 would be given to all workers who had completed three years in the company.
Work was resumed at 12 noon.
“The majority of the workers get Dh550 to Dh600 as wages, which is not sufficient if you compare it with the high cost of living. A wage hike was promised to us by our management at the beginning of this year but so far we have not got anything. This morning we all decided not to start work unless the management responded to what we had to say,'' said a worker.
Another worker said, “We did not want to create a problem with the authorities by taking out a march on the road that would disrupt traffic. We all thought that it is much better to arrive at our site and refuse to start work. The Dubai police were very sympathetic towards us and so were the labour officials. It is because of them that we had reached an agreement.''
