Abu Dhabi: The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has not revised the minimum wage of Indian blue-collar workers in the UAE for some years, the embassy said on Monday.

The embassy has come across news reports regarding demand for raise in minimum wages of Indians working in the Gulf countries, a press release issued by the embassy said.

As far as the Indian workers in the UAE are concerned, the embassy last revised minimum wages for various categories of Indian workers on March 15, 2011. Detailed information related to minimum wages can be accessed at https://www.uaeindians.org/newminimumwages.aspx.

There is no change to the information provided on the above-mentioned portal as of date. These wages are applicable to Indian workers in all the emirates of the UAE, the press release said.

As Gulf News reported on March 15, 2011, the minimum wage for 36 categories of skilled and unskilled Indian workers who wanted to work in the UAE was increased by 40 to 50 per cent.

While the previous minimum wage level, fixed several years ago, ranged from Dh600 to Dh1,000, the 2011 increased level was from Dh950 to Dh1,400. The increased minimum wages were applicable to new recruits from India.

“It is just a pre-condition set by the embassy to attest the job contracts of Indian workers who hold ECR [Emigration Clearance Required] passports,” the embassy had said.

Indians who have not passed matriculation (Grade 10) hold ECR passports and need clearance from the Protector of Emigrants [POE] of the Government of India to work abroad on an employment visa. The POE will give the emigration clearance based on the attestation of relevant documents by the Indian Embassy or the Consulate.
