Dubai: In a bid to reduce the level of unemployment among UAE nationals, the Emirates National Development Programme has recruited 100 men and women to work in banks across Fujairah.

The move was made as part of the authority’s strategic plan to boost the level of employment in the private sector within the Northern Emirates, and had received a total of 200 applicants from job seekers. There are currently as many as 5,000 people registered in the database of the Human Resources Department in the Fujairah government who are seeking employment.

“In this particular project, we collaborated with the government of Fujairah with the intention to motivate and prepare UAE nationals to work in the banking sector, and the 100 trainees will start their training program two weeks from now,” said Essa Al Mulla executive director of the ENDP, which was set up in 2005 to help UAE nationals find jobs in the private sector.

According to statistics from the Emirates National Development Programme (ENDP), the greatest concentration of UAE nationals in the private sector continues to be in banking, at about 33 per cent.

In 2011, the Ministry of Labour had recorded the unemployment rate at 14.4 per cent, which represents nearly 43,000 UAE nationals.

Al Mulla further stressed that the move was made in line with the directions of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who recently called on the ENDP to recruit UAE nationals in the private sector in order to reduce the level of unemployment.

“We have been able to recruit more than 9,000 people in the private sector during the past six years, as part of our focus to raise the level of employment across all the emirates,” he added.
