Dubai: Emaar has launched a crackdown on illegal car cleaners in the Emirates Living community.

Gardeners doubling as car cleaners in the posh Lakes Community have been warned they will be penalised if they are caught cleaning cars.

Gardening services here are provided by landscaping companies approved by Emaar.

A gardener was stopped by Emaar security last week when he was cleaning a resident’s car.

“The security took me to the control room and spoke to my company. He warned that I could be fined Dh500 and banned from entering the community for a week. I have been washing cars for here eight years. This is the first time I have been stopped.”

A number of Emirates Living residents utilise the services of gardeners to get their cars cleaned as it’s a cheap option. For Dh400 a month, the gardener maintains the garden space of a villa and cleans one car every day.

“If I had to take the car to the nearby petrol station it would cost around Dh30. I have one domestic help at home and she is busy taking care of my house. It is difficult to expect her to clean the car as well. My gardener has been cleaning my car for seven years. I know him well. I don’t know why he has been stopped now,” said a Lakes resident.

Another Lakes resident said: “For so many years gardeners have been cleaning cars. We cannot understand why this has happened all of a sudden. The communication from Emaar prior to stopping gardeners would have helped.”

No comment was immediately available from Emaar.
