Al Ain: The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi has confirmed the death of four Americans in a private aircraft crash on Sunday evening.

Four people were killed in the crash that took place after the aircraft took off en route to Saudi Arabia.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said it was a Grumman 21T aircraft. The aircraft took off from Al Ain International Airport for Riyadh at 16:07 UTC (20:07 local time) and shortly veered off to the left and crashed on Taxiway Kilo. The aircraft was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire, said the GCAA.

The airport fire and rescue services responded immediately and the accident site was secured by Al Ain Police.

The Air Accident Investigation team of the authority is leading the investigation into the accident. The twin-engine aircraft was owned by a Texas-based company that has an aviation consultancy office in Dubai. The names and identities of the crash victims were not released.

A spokesperson of the US Embassy said the mission extends its condolences to the families of those killed.
