Dubai: At least three wooden boats were gutted on Sunday morning in a massive fire at Al Jaddaf area near Business Bay Bridge in Dubai.
According to police, the fire broke out at around 9.45am in a wooden dhow loaded with oil and it spread to two other dhows docked nearby. Though the fire created panic among motorists as thick black smoke could be seen from several kilometres, there were no reports of casualties.
However, motorists on the Business Bay bridge and the Floating Bridge faced delays as many stopped to watch the fire, slowing down the traffic. The Floating Bridge in Deira was closed to traffic for some time to allow the firefighters’ boats to reach the spot.
The Civil Defence said the fire was brought under control with no injuries. A team of police and the Civil Defence has started investigations to find out the reasons for the fire and a report will be issued in a few days.
“The firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other boats on the dock,” said an official. Al Jaddaf is a docking yard for boat repairing and building.
