Sharjah: Police have succeeded in saving the life of an Ethiopian woman who threatened to commit suicide by throwing herself from a 16th-floor balcony.

An official at Sharjah Police confirmed that the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at a residential apartment in Al Nahda, where she lived with her family members.

"We were notified about the incident when concerned neighbours witnessed the woman on the balcony as she was preparing to jump," said the police official.

A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police was dispatched to the site. "A team of police officers talked to the woman, and were eventually able to persuade her not to jump and took her inside her apartment," the police official aid.

Police then took the 29-year-old woman to the police station, and learned that she had entered the country five years ago on a visit visa and was living with her husband and her sister.

"The woman had a heated argument with her sister and her brother, who was visiting them that day.

Investigation

"During the argument, her sister and brother hit her several times, which then led the woman to run to the nearest bedroom and threaten to jump from the balcony and kill herself," the police official explained.

Based on the woman's statement, police have launched an investigation, and the case has already been transferred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution.
