Sharjah: Normal power supply has been restored in most areas of Sharjah after intermittent disruptions experienced over the past few days, but residents are keeping their fingers crossed.

However, outages were reported from some industrial areas yesterday afternoon.

Residential buildings in many areas bore the brunt of the power cuts but people living in villas said they had not experienced any disruptions. "My home has not been affected and my family is very grateful for that. Even when the large power cut happened last year during Ramadan in many neighbourhoods, we were safe and continued to have electricity," said Fahd, a resident of Al Ghafia.

Residents of Sharqan, Al Hazana, Al Riqqa, Al Khezammia, Samnan, Al Shahba, Al Darari and Al Abar said they had not faced any power cuts at all.

The power outage started on Tuesday morning in residential and industrial areas, including Maysaloon, Al Yarmook and Al Nasseriya but the situation seemed to have improved by Wednesday afternoon.

"The power was restored by 3pm and I hope that it will not happen again, because it was torture to go without electricity for 20 hours straight. I was pleasantly surprised that it was restored so quickly, because I was worried that it would take a month to fix and it would be the same situation like last year," said M. Harris, a mother of two, who lives in Industrial Area 17.

"Thank goodness when I arrived at home in the evening, everything was back to normal. Having electricity is a basic necessity and, without it, we were helpless. We cannot afford to go through the same thing again," said Jacob, a resident of Industrial Area 3.

However, the joy was short-lived for some residents of the industrial areas with the electricity going off at 3pm yesterday in many localities.

"It was such a relief when it was restored on Wednesday because my son was then able to study for his O'levels in the comfort of his room, but that relief did not last for long," said Fatima, a resident of Industrial Area 1. "This is a very crucial time for students now because they are already stressed from the pressure of performing well in their examinations, and the last thing they needed was to sleep in a stuffy room and being unable to take a proper shower in the morning."
