Umm Al Quwain: Two young Emiratis died in a horrific accident on Emirates Road in Umm Al Quwain early Saturday morning, Major Saeed Obaid Bin Aran, director of the traffic department at Umm Al Quwain, told Gulf News Saturday.

The men, identified as Y.A., 19, and M.S., 17, were coming from Ras Al Khaimah toward Sharjah. The accident happened due to speeding which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, said Major Bin Aran.

Major Bin Aran said the crash happened at 1.30am near exit 110 towards Sharjah. The vehicle veered to the left lane as it was speeding and crashed into a concrete pole, causing it to overturn several times.

The totally damaged vehicle landed on a sandy area 250 metres from the road.

A police patrol and ambulance rushed to the scene upon receiving news of the incident, he added.

Not wearing seat belts

The two young Emirati men, who were not wearing seat belts, were thrown out of the vehicle when it hit the concrete pole.

The driver, Y.A., died on the spot while his relative was transferred to Umm Al Quwain Hospital where he was pronounced dead despite efforts to save his life.

Major Bin Aran urged road users to abide by the speed limits specified on the internal and external roads, and to use seat belts while driving in order to protect themselves and other road users.

A spate of horrendous road accidents has plagued the roads of UAE since the beginning of the month. In Dubai, two people died within four hours early last Sunday morning, raising the road accident death toll in the emirate to six.

Eight separate accidents were reported in Abu Dhabi on the same day due to bad weather, but there were no casualties, according to the Abu Dhabi Police.
