Sharjah: A policeman was honoured for rescuing a family involved in a car accident while off duty.

Sharjah First Sergeant Ahmad Hazem Al Shamsi was awarded a special medal by the police chief after he helped a couple involved in an accident at midnight on the second day of the Eid holidays last week.

Major-General Hamid Mohammad Al Hudaidi, General Commander of Sharjah Police, praised Al Shamsi’s quick thinking during a ceremony held at his office yesterday.

The accident occurred after the woman, accompanied by her husband, lost control of the car, which then veered onto the pavement and heading straight into Al Majaz park in Sharjah.

Al Shamsi, a 28-year-old police officer, told Gulf News that he rushed to the assistance of the injured couple.

On reaching the car, he found the woman unconscious, with her legs stuck between the brake pedals. Al Shamsi said he immediately sought the help of another woman who witnessed the accident in getting the injured woman out of her seat.

He administered first aid and she regained consciousness but complained of pain in her legs.

The husband was conscious and while he was able to talk to Al Shamsi, he was unable to move owing to the pain.

Al Shamsi called the police, who alerted an ambulance which then transferred the injured couple to Al Kuwaiti Hospital. The couple were treated and discharged on the second day.

Maj Gen Al Hudaidi praised Al Shamsi for rushing to the couple’s aid despite being off duty.

The ceremony was attended by Colonel Sultan Abdullah Al Khayal, director of Media and Public Relations, and Colonel Abdullah Sultan Al Mulla, manager of the General Commander’s Office.

Al Shamisi joined the force in 2003. His father is also with Sharjah Police while his cousin, Ebrahim Ahmad Al Shamsi, is the police office who rescued a baby snatched from his parents on Eid Al Fitr.
