Dubai: Four people died and five were injured in an accident involving three cars that took place on the Academic City road near Al Warqa’a roundabout on Monday evening.

Maj Gen Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police Chief, who went to the scene of the accident later, said on Tuesday that the victims were all aged between 17 to 20.

He added that three of the dead were Arab and one was an American.

The 18-year-old driver who caused the accident is in police custody.

The accident took place at around 11.30pm, when the Emirati driver of the first car, who police said was at fault, was speeding and driving recklessly, which led him to lose control of his vehicle and swerve to the right, crashing into a car that was parked on the hard shoulder.

The first car flipped due to the intensity of the crash and the second car veered off and hit the third car.

The second car also hit eight people who were standing and chatting close to the second and third cars, which led to the death of four people and injuries to another four.

Their injuries varied between serious and moderate, and they were taken to Rashid Hospital for treatment.
