Dubai: An Asian man drowned in the sea off Umm Suquiem beach on Friday night, Gulf News has learned.

The man had been swimming with his brother and died later in Rashid Hospital, according to the Dubai Police operations room.

Eyewitness Gaurav Vansal, 20, student, was with three of his friends on the beach when they witnessed the scene around 6.30pm.

"We saw a man's hand waving from the sea then people started running down the beach… we saw them come out of the sea with the man, but he wasn't responding."

The eyewitnesses said that the man appeared to have been with people who knew him, as they were calling his name while they tried to resuscitate him. Emergency services arrived within five to 10 minutes according to the witnesses.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology issued a weather warning on Friday, advising people to stay away from the sea.

Strong undercurrents are known to exist in the waters off Dubai, causing other drownings in the past. People are advised to stay out of the water during turbulent weather conditions, particularly those who are not strong swimmers.
