Sharjah: A 29-year-old man drowned off Al Khan beach while a 26-year-old Indian man escaped death while they spent time at Al Khan beach on Tuesday afternoon, Sharjah Police have confirmed.

The body of the Arab victim was recovered by the police rescue team and moved to Al Kuwaiti Hospital.

The Indian man was transferred to Al Kuwaiti Hospital.

His condition is reported to be stable.

A Sharjah Police official said the police received a call from a beachgoer about the accident at around 3.15pm. Witnesses said the victim was struggling to swim.

Col Sultan Abdullah Al Khayal, director of media and public relations department at Sharjah Police, appealed to the public to avoid swimming in areas where warning signs are displayed.

He urged beachgoers to abide by safety rules and avoid swimming in dangerous places as well as to ask about weather conditions before going to the sea to swim.

He said that Sharjah Police and Rescue Department are taking precautionary and preventive measures and distributing patrols in areas that witness drowning incidents in order to spread safety awareness.

Warning signs have been posted along the UAE coastline in a bid to prevent swimmers from risking their lives in areas known for heavy riptides which can pull unsuspecting swimmers out to sea.
