Sharjah: A 23-year-old Ethiopian woman plunged to her death after she fell from the 24th floor balcony of a tower building in the Al Majaz area on Friday afternoon.

"The investigation is still ongoing to determine whether the woman committed suicide or if it was accidental," said Major Mohammad Al Shehhi, Director of Media and Moral Guidance Department at Sharjah Police.

The case has been referred to Buheira Police Station for further investigation.

Police investigators are interviewing the family she worked for.

‘Killed on the spot'

According to neighbours, the victim worked as a housemaid for an Arab family at Queen Tower near Al Qasba.

"Police rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene at around 5pm, but the woman was killed on the spot. Her body was first sent to Kuwaiti Hospital, but has since been transferred to the Forensic Laboratory at Sharjah Police for further investigation," Al Shehhi said.

Quiet girl

The watchman of the 25-storey Queen Tower told Gulf News that the victim was a quiet, petite girl who usually kept to herself.

"I hardly saw her except when she used to go out to throw the rubbish. She never said much and I was shocked when I found out that she fell out of the building," said the watchman, as he pointed towards the sandy parking lot where the victim landed.

Alarmed

Neighbours said they were alarmed when they saw an ambulance and policemen cordoning off the area.

They knew something bad happened when they heard loud shouts in Arabic.

"I didn't understand what they were saying, but from their tone, I knew something was wrong. I walked over to the other side, towards the back of the building, and saw a body covered in a white sheet of cloth," said a resident, who declined to be named.
