Ras Al Khaimah: A two-year-old Bangladeshi girl was burned to death in the majlis of the house of her stepfather whose three-and-a-half-year-old son playing with a lighter set the house on fire in the Khor Khowair area here.

Colonel Mohammad Abdullah Al Za'abi, acting head of the RAK Civil Defence Department, said that the body of the little girl was totally burnt.

The family members noticed smoke coming from the majlis but didn't think the girl was still in the room.

Colonel Al Za'abi said that the boy and girl were playing together in the majlis and the boy had a lighter in his pocket, with which he set a fire.

The fire quickly spread to other parts of the house.

Shocked

He said that the firemen quickly fought the fire and when they managed to get into the majlis they were shocked to find the body of the little girl.

The son of the Emirati told the police investigators during the initial investigations that he was carrying a lighter in his pocket and that he was playing with the girl when he set some items in the room on fire and then fled.

The girl was the daughter of a divorced Bangladeshi woman.

The mother later married an Emirati, who was already married to a compatriot woman and had several boys and girls, the youngest of whom was the boy who set the house on fire.

Colonel Al Za'abi called on parents to prevent their children from playing with lighters and matches since this can lead to tragedies such as this one.
