Sharjah: Two young goldsmiths, both brothers, suffered serious injuries when a gas cylinder exploded due to a leakage in their workshop in a residential building in Al Muraijah area of Sharjah on Sunday morning, said Sharjah Police.

While S.M.B., 25, sustained 95 per cent burns, his brother MT.M.B., 35, sustained 85 per cent burns. They are undergoing treatment at Kuwaiti Hospital in Sharjah.

Colonel Khalid Bin Kanoon, acting Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News that the fire broke out in the workshop after the gas cylinder explosion at around 11.30am.

The police are investigating the cause of the accident. “We are trying to find if the goldsmiths had permission to conduct their business in the residential building,” said a police officer.

Col Bin Kanoon said that the Civil Defence Department will hold a meeting with the Economic Development Department in Sharjah to set guidelines for the operation of gold workshops in residential area and there is a proposal to shift them to the industrial area because of the nature of the work, he said.

A number of similar incidents have taken place recently and the authorities want to avoid any damages inside residential areas due to such incidents, he said.
