Sharjah: A disaster was averted on Thursday when Civil Defence were alerted about an oil canister that caught on fire in a warehouse, confirmed a senior civil defence official.
“A team from the fire stations of Samnan and Moweilah were dispatched to industrial area 12 in Sharjah, after it came to our attention that a warehouse containing oil canisters and other flammable liquids was on fire,” said Brigadier General Abdulla Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director General of Sharjah Civil Defence.
Brig Gen Al Suwaidi told reporters at the scene that they were able to put the fire, “quickly under control,” and prevented it from spreading to other nearby warehouses.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
He pointed out that the fire broke out at about 10am and that assistance was also called in from the authorities in Dubai and Ajman, who supplied Sharjah Civil Defence with fire trucks in the event that the fire became too large to control.
”The materials contained in the warehouse, such as the oils and scrap, accelerated the flames but we managed to get there in time and extinguished the fire within two hours,” said Brig Gen Al Suwaidi.
He further added that a cooling process was carried out for the remainder of the day, and that a team from the Forensic Laboratory at Sharjah Police are investigating the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
