Investigation begins into cause of blaze that destroyed a residential building

Sharjah: Police have started an investigation into the cause of a fire that broke out in a residential building near Al Tawun Mall in Sharjah on Wednesday.

The fire started at the 10th floor of the Al Bakri Tower, a spokesman from the Sharjah Police said, adding that a fire brigade quickly responded to control the blaze.

The fire erupted at about 2am on Wednesday and was not put out until 6am.

By 3pm, white smoke could still be seen from the gutted apartments. Tenants continued to stand outside the tower in shock and awe as teams from Civil Defence and Sharjah Police investigated the cause of the fire.

Families evacuated

Police have confirmed that 125 families have been evacuated from Al Baker Tower. 
 
Residents at the top floors of the tower were evacuated. There were no casualties reported.
