Abu Dhabi: Patients escaped unharmed after a fire broke out on Friday in the nuclear medicine oncology department at the Mafraq Hospital in the capital.

In a statement released by the hospital, it was announced that the fire was contained quickly and that there were no casualties or major damage, although nine patients in the Emergency Department were moved to another ward as a precaution.

A representative from the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha), which manages public hospitals in the emirate, told Gulf News that the incident is currently under investigation.

Immediately after the fire broke out, Abu Dhabi police advised all ambulances to re-route to other hospitals, however, Mafraq is again ready to receive patients.

Greg Florentin, chief operations officer at the hospital, said in the statement that the fire was localised and not serious. “No patients or employees were ever in danger and our emergency procedures worked as planned.”
