Abu Dhabi: A nine year-old child died after falling from the eighth floor of her parents' Hamdan Street apartment, the Abu Dhabi Police said in a statement Thursday.

The victim, a Syrian girl, was in a critical condition when she was rushed to Shaikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) after her fall.

“It is sad to see another accident of this nature occur especially after all the efforts that the Ministry of Interior is taking to combat this phenomenon,” said Major-General Nasser Al Khraibani Al Nuaimi, Secretary-General of the office of deputy.

The official also highlighted the importance of parents taking all necessary precautions and safety measures in homes where children are present. He also urged parents to prohibit their children from going to areas in the house that could pose a threat to them, and to give this measure a priority.

Building owners, developers, contractors and consultants should also make it their duty to abide by regulations and safety standards, he added.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Faisal Mohammad Al Shammari, Director of the Child Protection Centre at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters said that strict rules should be placed when using balconies and windows for both adults and children as a fall as low as two metres could lead to death.

“For children, the distance between the metal bars on windows could be wide enough to let them in if they decided to climb through them,” he added.
