Sharjah: A mother is being accused of negligence after her four-year-old boy fell to his death from a sixth-floor apartment in Sharjah on Monday morning.

Police said the boy was left unsupervised and managed to clamber up to the window from a table which was placed underneath it.

Police said: “The Pakistani child, identified as M.M., reportedly managed to climb up to a window in the house and slipped through the grill and fell to the ground.”

The boy’s mother told police she was busy cleaning the house and preparing lunch for the family and her son was playing in the other room. Later she suspected something was wrong as she couldn’t hear her son. She went to investigate and found the window open and her son gone.

She saw her son lying in a pool of blood and people gathering around him.

The accident happened at a building in the Moleih area of Sharjah on Monday morning

Police patrols and an ambulance were called to the scene at round 9.47am, the official said.

The boy was killed instantly and his body was taken to Al Qasimi Hospital at round 10.30am.

Police have accused the boy’s mother of negligence as she left her son unsupervised. In addition, a table which was placed underneath the window helped the boy access the window.

The case is with Al Gharb police station and a police investigation is ongoing.

Sharjah Police pointed out that despite police efforts to combat such tragic incidents and educate parents on the risk of placing chairs or tables under windows or in the balcony, such deaths continue.

In light of recent incidents, Colonel Sultan Al Khayal, director of the media and public relations department at Sharjah Police, warned parents not to leave their children unattended at home and to instruct housemaids to keep a close eye on them.

Hazardous items should also be kept out of children’s reach, including kitchen knives and gas cylinders.

Colonel Al Khayal urged the public to lock their windows and to place aluminium barriers at windows to prevent children from falling out. People should also take care to store dangerous chemicals out of reach of children.

These include detergents and other cleaning products.
