Ajman: Residents have complained about a huge hole on a pedestrian bridge which is putting lives at risk.

The hole is on the bridge over Al Ittihad Road (previously known as Shaikh Zayed Road) that allows residents to access GMC Hospital on the opposite side.

Yahya Ebrahim, Director-General of Ajman Municipality and Planning Department, said, “The pedestrian bridge is new and is part of a road project that is still under construction and development.”

Maintenance work is still under way on the project, he said.

Ebrahim said that the municipality would send engineers to the bridge to assess the situation and carry out repairs.

“The project is still under development and the municipality will do the necessary maintenance to ensure the safety of the emirate’s residents,” Marwan Al Nuaimi, Head of Public Relations at Ajman Municipality, said.

He added that residents who had any complaints or safety concerns were welcome to approach the municipality.

Some residents added the hole was so big that children and women could fall through it onto the busy road that links Ajman to Sharjah.

Mother-of-two Asma Khalid, said: “It may cause deaths and injuries.”

Yousuf Salim, a father of one, said, the hole represented a considerable danger for local residents, especially children.

The bridge was built to help ease traffic on one of Ajman’s busiest roads, but the hole now poses a greater danger to residents, another resident said.

Mohammad Khalid called on the authorities to close the hole to avert accidents.
