DUBAI: When darkness falls, Discovery Gardens turns into a shadowy area, sending shivers down the spines of residents.

The township has generous landscaping, but poor lighting has led to parents stopping their kids from playing out at night. A Jordanian mother said: “Look how dark it is outside. I cannot see the people walking around. How can I send my girls to play outside alone?”

XPRESS found the Discovery Gardens very dimly lit. In fact, it was hard to even see the street signs on the roads.

“It is easy for people to get lost here if they do not know their way,” said another resident. “Apart from the lack of sufficient lighting, building numbers are also not prominently placed, making it easy for drivers unfamiliar with the area to get lost at night.”

One Indian resident said she would be writing a letter to Nakheel regarding the matter. “When summer starts, children stay out late playing. Therefore, we request Nakheel to take action soon to improve the lighting. Moreover, I work from 10am to 7pm and find the area a bit eerie to walk alone at night.”

In the past, Discovery Gardens residents have raised other issues with developer Nakheel, including better security in the area. A Nakheel spokesperson said: “We are evaluating the light intensity at several areas in the Community and planning to enhance it where required. Safety of residents and properties is paramount for Nakheel and we continuously work towards improving that.”
