I am a resident of Electra Street, in Abu Dhabi. To get adequate space for parking cars in our area was never a problem, even during peak working hours.
However, now, the situation has changed to such an extent that people have started to park their cars in the middle of the road, thus creating a whole new line.
The apparent reason for the sudden increase in car parking requirements in areas such as the Corniche and Electra Street is because people prefer to park their cars here in order to avoid paid parking fees.
This practice has caused Hamdan Street — where paid parking has been implemented — to take on a deserted look, because people are avoiding the area, and thus the parking fee, when it is time to park their vehicles.
Consequently, residents of nearby areas are suffering, due to the lack of parking spaces. My request to the concerned authorities is to please implement a roll-out plan for paid parking in other areas as soon as possible.
I hope this step would help in eradicating the problem of overcrowding, as it would definitely encourage all residents to apply for a parking space in their respective areas.
This would also discourage commercial vehicles from parking in residential spaces. It is hoped that all the suggested remedies for the problem of parking would be addressed immediately.

Cutting costs
Residents in Abu Dhabi are avoiding paid parking zones and are instead parking in nearby neighbourhoods for free.
Gulf News reader Afroz Mohsin said: “[People in] these areas are now suffering, due to the lack of parking spaces.”
