The yellow and red Estelada flag has become synonymous with Catalan’s independence movement, and the banner is flown from many windows and apartment buildings across the region, as well as being used by independence supporters at rallies.

Its use dates back to the formation of the Catalan league in 1904. Although it is often used by football fans at Barcelona home games, the club has been fined by Uefa, the Union of European Football Associations because it contravenes rules over political displays and statements during football games.
