Geneva, Switzerland: Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and the Global Dialogue has achieved significant success in hosting diverse activities in 2017, according to its annual report and activities released in Geneva on Saturday.
These achievements culminated in 2017 by granting the United Nations Economic and Social Council the status of “Consultative Status” for the Geneva Centre for Human Rights and the Global Dialogue.
The Centre has succeeded in consolidating and expanding cooperation with a number of permanent missions of States, such as African Union,Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Pakistan, the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of OIC and Sovereign Order of Malta.
The Geneva Centre at a Glance
The Geneva Center sought to build alliances and a joint dialogue to address issues related to the promotion of human rights in 2017.
The Geneva Centre for Human Rights and Global Dialogue presented various programs and activities, such as enhancing global dialogue, directing research, raising awareness and capacity building.
Among the most prominent issues of the Centre's agenda are interfaith dialogue, Islamophobia, the rise of religious extremism, the rejections of racism and discrimination, the human rights situation of Muslims of Myanmar and other minorities, refugees and migrants, women’s rights in the Arab world, education and equal citizenship rights.
Dr. Hanif Hassan Al Qasim, Chairman of the Centre stated that the report gives precise details about the activities of the Center during 2017, considering that granting the United Nations Economic and Social Council a special consultative status for the Geneva Centre for Human Rights and the World Dialogue is another achievement added the the centre’s march.
Since its establishment in 2013 as a non-governmental or profit organization, it has been seeking to organize research and training activities in the field of human rights and promote human dialogue to raise the level of professionalism in the performance of specialized workers in this field, as well as the introduction of modern concepts to promote the culture of human rights in societies.
Seminars
A series of seminars, panel discussions and conferences which was attended by the Geneva Centre for human rights, included a number of important points.
The Centre held a special session in a campaign on 12th of October 2017, to examine the human rights situation in Myanmar of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and The Human Rights Council met on 5th of December 2017 to discuss the human rights situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Rakhine State.
Studies and publications
The list of publications and periodicals included a number of headlines that filled world opinion in 2017, most prominent were: Islam and Christianity, The Great Convergence:Working Jointly Towards Equal Citizenship Rights, The Right to Development, 30 Years Later: Achievements, Challenges and The Way Forward, Muslims in Europe: The Road to Social Harmony, Women’s Rights in the Arab Region: Myths and Realities and Background note on the human rights situation of the Rohingya Muslim population in Myanmar.
Training
The Geneva Centre, in cooperation with Emirates Association of Lawyers and Legal Experts, the UAE Association of Journalists, the University of the United Arab Emirates and Zayed University organised a number of training events such as, Enhancing Journalists’ Role in Promoting Human Rights that took place on 10th-13th of July 2017 in Geneva, Promotion and Protection of Human Rights: Legal Experts’ Engagement with UN Human Rights Mechanisms and Specialized Agencies on 20th-23rd of March 2017 in Dubai and Promotion and Protection of Human Rights: Enhancing Civil Society’s Engagement on 26th-29th of September 2017 in Geneva
